I trust that all is well. If not, then there is all the more reason for you to be heeding what I tell you. You may not remember, but if you cast your mind back, you will remember entrusting this letter to a friend who has, in time, returned it.
I cannot fathom what the channel you have chosen is like but I am sure that you are still the self-centred, stingy but quite bona-fide individual I claim to be. It’s perhaps because of that I chose to write this letter.
Remember that life is a river. No matter the obstacle, water will cut its path, creating a plethora of channels. You may fight it, but the water continues to flow, such is the inevitability of existence.
Remember that whoever treasured this letter for many a year must be very dear to you and I. Do not allow yourself to be so engulfed in your own channel that you lose sight of the loyal stream beside you. Bridge the gap between you and those around you because in miserable times of life they will be dearer than ever.
Remember not to get hung like limp laundry when another river may seem deeper than yours. Nobody’s life starts at the same point, therefore nobody shall ever be equal. Learn to accept this and your thoughts will flow peacefully.
Until then, remember not to apprehend yourself. Accept that your channel will meander and that some goals elude you. This is definitely not reason to beach you and make accusations, which is as effective as swimming knee-deep in silt. Enjoy the sensation of your channel joining another but don’t be disheartened if you part again. Such pettiness is simply battle between you, yourself and thou.
Sometimes you will hit a rock. That rock may be mundane, like mealtimes. Remember: food is fuel and fuel alone. Or it may be something you apotheosize, like reward. The knowledge of your own achievement should be enough.
Remember I cannot possibly know what happened between the times of writing this letter and when it was read. I don’t know why someone felt compelled to give you this. I only know that now it is a way of telling the truth when dams have burst. I flow freely and I desire the same for you. Do not allow anything to build a dam around you or the people you love. From the smallest amoeba to the largest whale, everybody has a chance to carve a channel in the ground that will remain when they do not.
From times elapsed,
Your younger self
